a little of this & a little of that

My Thoughts & Prayers are with those that have been affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Even has a native Florida girl I can’t say that I know what you are going through. I’ve had my fair share of Hurricane days, but never experienced something as awful as Sandy. I’ve been fortunate

Stay safe friends.

Racing makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside; gives me a sense of satisfaction, and accomplishment. On Monday morning I stalked active.com for a race this coming weekend. I wasn’t worried about the distance, I just needed a race.

I thought a half-marathon would be fun, but I could only find one and it involved a few to many overpasses. I finally settled on a 5k that is described as a great race for first timers or anyone looking to set a personal best {me! me!} …

When I registered I forgot that I had already broken into the 22:XX time zone of 5k-land… I ran a 5k at the end of September that I had totally forgotten about. Thankfully it’s supposed to be cool this weekend so maybe I can bring my 5k time down just a teeny bit.

5k PR

My current PR is 22:46 – I’d take a 1 second PR … a PR is a PR, right?

I’m pretty exciting about this upcoming race season {even though I’ve barely been running the last few weeks}. I updated my “RACES” page and added my upcoming races for the 2012 – 2013 season.

Speaking of races.. I got an e-mail that my race pictures were ready.. I don’t like to hijack race pictures, but I really need to show you guys these shrek-tastic pictures. I mean, these are bad.. it makes me laugh to look at them.

jena shrek collage

uh also, short hair is not cute while running.

The picture on the left is right before or after I was drafting.. I want to say before, but I’m really not sure – The photo on the right, I have no idea.. it’s just bad.

The weather this week has been super amazing in Florida … well, if the wind would go away, it would be super duper amazing. {and yes, I said super duper.. deal with it.}

I love cool weather, I finally get to wear jeans & sweaters, and hoodies & sweatpants!

and then… as soon as I get home, I change into this:

{isn’t chris lucky?}

It’s been in the 60’s the last few days so we’ve been leaving the ac/heat off and opening the windows. This morning it was 67 in the house when we woke up! GLORIOUS! I hope this cool weather continues for a few more weeks!

Happy Halloween

do you like Halloween? I could care less. I wouldn’t be sad if the “holiday” disappeared all together.

race report: Halloween Halfathon {2012}

This morning started before most people were headed home from the bars.. I got up at 2:15 .. I drank coffee, ate a plain bagel, took a shower, got dressed, drank more coffee, packed a to-go cup of coffee, packed another bagel and hit the road at 3:45.

It’s supposed to be a 2hr drive to Ft. Desoto from my house.. but apparently there isn’t a whole lot of traffic at that time of the morning {and I drive fast} so I arrived at 5:15.  — I’d much rather arrive early then be stressing out over traffic and parking. I’m quite content to sit in my car, listen to the radio, and have free reign over the port-o-potties.

Nothing exciting happened pre-race, like last year – I’d link the recap, but it doesn’t work since the great blog-apocalypse of 2012. Jenny & I went out for a few warm up laps about 6:45 (and stuck to well lit areas so I wouldn’t bust myself up). The National Anthem was sung, and we were off at 7:05.

My original plan was to try & PR, but the forecast wasn’t exactly ideal so I scrapped those plans and decided to just enjoy the first half of the season – not worry about my time.

The first few miles were windy, and gave us a little taste of what the last few miles of the course would be like. I attempted drafting a guy in the first few miles, but he was kind of all over the place with his pace so I gave up and passed him. Sometime in between miles 2 – 3 I lost Jenny –

I was feeling good, so I just went with it. Eventually we got out of the wind and had a nice tail wind from miles 3.5 – the turn around which is somewhere between 8 & 9 (I think).

corridor of hell

I don’t know why some areas were worse for wind than others, but around mile 10ish we hit a headwind that practically blew me backwards. It was all I could do to keep moving forward. I stopped to walk twice – I just couldn’t take it. The wind was just….brutal.

A super nice (& tall) gentleman told me to tuck in behind him! YAY! I’m not sure how far we ran like that, but it was fabulous. I could still feel the wind, but it wasn’t quite as bad. Eventually we got out of the wind and the guy told me that I should lean forward a little bit and I would be able to run through the wind better.. So in the next wind tunnel I leaned forward slightly and I was able to tackle the wind a little better. Somewhere between 11 & 12 we hit an awesome wall and I said, very loudly, “Oh shit.”   Nice draft guy laughed and said, “yeah..”

Thankfully that tunnel didn’t last long and I was able to maintain an okay pace. I picked it up the last mile and finished feeling really strong.

Halloween halfathon 2012

I have my watch set so that I can’t see my overall time, so I had no idea where I actually was in relation to my PR. When I rounded the last corner I saw that I had already passed my PR, but not by much – I was stoked! I didn’t come out to race, but ended up having a {mostly} fantastic race.

Gun time: 1:47:37
Chip time: 1:47:23
AG: 2/56
Female: 13/365
OA: 76/627

big one is my AG award, smaller one is the finishers medal. LOVE them! So pretty, so shiny!

Despite the wind I really enjoyed this race – It was the first race of our season and I felt really strong. I never felt tired – I was over the wind, but I never wanted to just quit.

My knees felt good, no IT band pain. Overall a really terrific race.

Fuel: I ate a bagel when I got up this morning, around 2:30.. I ate a few bites of another bagel in the car around 5:45.

I brought 2 gels on the course, but I dropped one at mile 4 – I could have stopped to pick it up, but I didn’t feel like it. I took my only gel at mile 4.5 …. The course offers gatorade (barf), water & oranges (barf). I took water at 4.5, 6.5 & 8.5(ish) .. small sips – It wasn’t hot, and I never felt thirsty.

As always Chris Lauber threw down an awesome event! So organized, and well run. Looking forward to the Holiday Half on December 9th!

random crap on a friday

This morning I was reading the latest issue of Shape and came across an article called Jet, Set GO! The article lists 4 airports and some neat features that they have for travelers passing through.

Did you know:

San Francisco Int’l Airport has a yoga studio – It’s located past security in terminal 2. The studio provides a few place to practice your poses, stretch out or simply unwind.

Chicago O’Hare has access to the Hilton Hotel Health club – Located in the basement of terminal 2. ($15/day).

Dallas/Ft.Worth has a tiled “LiveWell Walking Path which winds from Gate D6 to D40. Along the path there are two 55ft high staircases, and the path ends at a yoga studio.

Baltimore/Washington{Thurgood Marshall Airport} has an 11 mile bike path right outside the airport that travelers with bikes, or walkers can use.

Have you ever utilized any of these features at those airports? Any other hidden secrets at airports you’ve traveled through?

I rarely fly, and when I do I usually fly out of St.Pete or Sanford, both are very small airports that have flights that fly into very small airports. I do think it’s kind of neat that these airports are offering their travelers a way to relax during their travels.

Other random crap: I made pizza for dinner tonight and I realized, while rolling out the dough, that I hate it when pizza’s aren’t round. I mean, they don’t have to be perfect, but square pizza? That doesn’t even make sense.

I’m not going to complain if someone else is making the pizza, but If I’m making the pizza, the dough needs to be round..

uhm, I still haven’t run this week. I got up early this morning, went down to the bonus room where my treadmill is, walked for 1/4 mile, then tried to run …. my legs were like, “uhm, no. Nope, this isn’t happening so you might as well just stop.”

I made it 1/4 mile before I gave up. I stretched for about 30 minutes then called it good.

I did ride the stationary bike for 45 minutes when I got home from work today – it’s not running, but it counts for something. I also did a little more stretching.

I just checked the class schedule for the Y, and they have an hour long yoga class at 9am on Saturday, so I think I’ll go check that out.

nighty night

I’m stinking exciting to sleep in Saturday morning! I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wake up at 3:XX on a Saturday morning. It’s been a while. Chris has been out of town all week so I’m doubly excited that he’ll be home!

another fun fact: I’ve seen Chris approximately 8 hours in the last 20 days.. I’m SO over this month.

My first challenge…sort of

I still haven’t run this week – I actually got up at 5am this morning to run, but when I went down into the garage we had a little house emergency so I had to nix the run & take care of our problem.. ugh, of course, the house is about to go on the market and this issue pops up. What the heck – I guess that’s the way things to though, right?

Maybe I’ll have better luck on Friday.

Earlier this week I read about the Pile on the Miles Challenge that Monica is having for the month of November. I was interested, but I know how I am about sticking to challenges so I decided to think about it for a few more days.

Well I obviously need a little motivation to start logging some miles, so I figure this will be a good way to stay motivated through the month of November.

Here is the low-down on the challenge:

Who: Everyone is invited to join

What: Online challenge to walk or run more during turkey month.

When: November 1 – December 1. Winners announced Dec 2nd.

Where: Sign up and Update your weekly mileage on the spreadsheet below

Why: To challenge yourself and encourage others to move more. This isn’t about weight loss or distance – it’s about doing a little extra this month.

The Rules:

1. Sign up on the Google Spreadsheet by October 31st.

There will be a place for your name, blog address and twitter handle. You must put in a name, but the other entries are optional. If you have a blog please add it so we can create the most epic blogroll ever!

2. Set a goal at the beginning of the challenge to WALK or RUN x amount of miles. These could be miles on the treadmill OR outside/inside walking OR running. No biking or elliptical miles don’t count.

3.  We will be using calendar weeks Sun-Sat, but the first week is Thur-Sat. It’s clearly marked on the spreadsheet. Please update your miles for the previous week by Monday.

4. Optional: Leave a comment on RER Nov 1 and 5, 12, 19, 26 with your Mileage Goal for that week. All comments on those posts will be entered into a giveaway.

Check out Monica’s blog for the list of prizes that she is giving away in conjunction w/ this challenge – There is some pretty great prizes in that lineup!

I set a personal goal of 100 miles .. I have no idea how many miles I’ve logged this month, but I think 100 sounds attainable for November….. if I get my ass in gear.

Have you ever done a month long blog challenge?
What was it?
Did you complete the entire month or give up?

Just Breath: My first time at yoga

I went to my first “real” yoga class tonight. I sucked it up, paid the $12 and went.

The Y offers yoga, but I want to check out a real studio. I was afraid if I want to the yoga at the Y, that it might suck, and then I would definitely hate yoga.

I’m already unsure about it, so I wanted a “real” studio, and since we only have one in the entire county I don’t have a whole lot of options. They were offering a beginners class at 5:35, so I registered online and showed up at 5:20.

The studio is one room, not very big, and  the smell of incense was WAY overpowering. whoa.

The class ran from 5:35 – 7:05pm, this worried me initially – What if I hated it, and I was stuck there for 1.5hrs? I chose a spot furthest from the door so that I could not walk out – I had to stay for the entire class.

The class was small, 6 people, and I was the youngest by about 15 years. I was hopeful. I need to relax. I need to let go of all the stress, take some deep breaths and chill out.

The class started with a reading from a Yoga book {I admit, I thought this was corny, but looking back, it was peaceful}

The class was based on this Sutra,  “One becomes firmly established in practice only after attending to it for a long time, without interruption and with an attitude of devotion.” ~ Yoga Sutra I.14

Then we they did a few OHMS, and we began.. The class was slow paced, which is okay since I don’t know what I’m doing, but it was a little to slow – Maybe I just didn’t mesh with the teacher…

As hard as I tried, I could not full relax, I just couldn’t. I tried to keep reminding myself that no one was paying attention to what I was doing – I had my eyes closed the majority of the time so I sure as hell didn’t know what anyone else was doing (except the instructor) but I was too self-conscious to fully focus.

Will I do it again? Yes. I’ll go back when there is another teacher, and see if that makes a difference.

In other non-yoga related news: I still haven’t run this week. Oh well

Looking lost

Good News: After 2.5 years of having almost non-existent cellphone service I bit the bullet and bought the AT&T micro-cell. It’s basically a cell tower that is hooked to your wireless modem that emits a cell signal.

When I had my iPhone I had so-so service, but since I switched over to the HTC one X the service is crap. It cost $200, but it’s an investment that will be worth it when I don’t have to say, “What? What? Dammit, let me go outside” during every single conversation. There is no monthly fee so it’s just a flat $200, which is less than I would pay per year if I had a house phone.

I’m a happy camper, facebooking, and twittering, and instagraming from my phone without any trouble. yay!

AT&T didn’t pay to me talk about this device, but they should..

I am sad to say that I didn’t get up early on Tuesday to get my run in. I just couldn’t. I don’t know what it is about getting up early during the week, but I just can’t. 3:45am on a Saturday? Sure, why the heck not? 5am on a weekday? Nope, can’t do it. Doesn’t make any sense.

Because of this I haven’t ran at all this week. I ran 1/2mi as my warm up this after at the gym, but that was it.

I think I don’t force myself to get up because I know that I can always run after work.. even if I won’t.

Maybe I’ll have more luck on Wednesday, ha. I do have an appointment Wednesday afternoon, and I’d like to go the gym after the appointment, so I really NEED to run Wednesday morning.

^^^^ That is me convincing myself I need to wake up early and run before work.

Today’s workout looks pretty similar to yesterday – I’m limiting myself by being afraid to use the barbells, and the squat rack {Even though this week I’m avoiding legs}.. Seriously, the free weight section is scary. There are no other women over there. none. Who wants to be a good friend and come hang out w/ me in the men’s section of the gym?

Warm-up: 1/2mi run

DB Shoulder press               3×8 15lb
DB Front Raise                      3×8 8lb
DB Deadlift                             3×8 20lb
DB Bicep curl                         3×8 15lb
DB Lat raise                            3×8 8lb

I have kind of a stupid problem, I don’t know how to put the weights on the bar – I mean, obviously the weight goes on the bar, but I don’t know how to clip it on – or make sure it stays on.. I tried googling… LOL .. No luck.. OMG, I’m an idiot. I’m already intimidated enough, I don’t want to stand there fumbling w/ the stupid bar..

OH, and what if I can’t even lift the bar. Good grief. Such stupid problems to have.

Can you recommend some web resources for weight lifting {for women}. Websites, blogs, articles…anything. I’m trying to read/learn as much as possible.

I ordered two books today from Amazon:

Strength Training Anatomy, by Frederic Delavier

Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs and the controversial science of diet & Health, by Gary Taubes

Have you read either book? Have you heard anything about either book?

I have heard of Gary Taubes before, but I have never read any of his books – I’ve heard great things, so I’m hopeful. I’ve never heard, or seen the anatomy book before, but it got great reviews on amazon, so again, I’m hopeful.

Lifting Log: Biceps/Shoulders

Only a few more days until my first half of the season – I really haven’t thought about it all that much; I don’t have a plan. I checked the weather – it’s not ideal. 70’s at the start, high in the 80’s . Oh well, I ran plenty of long runs in the ridiculous heat & humidity.. just another long run.

I  want to PR, but If I don’t, I won’t be upset – I have plenty of other halfs this season to set a new PR.halloween half 2012 medal

I went to the gym for the 2nd time today – I was a little more comfortable this time – I went at 4, so it wasn’t very crowded. Earlier In the day I downloaded an app called Lifting Log – I entered in the routine I wanted to do, and as I did each exercise I could enter the reps/weights into the app.

It was annoying to carry my phone around, but I haven’t figured out an alternative yet. I want to keep track of what I’m doing, and my brain is mush so I don’t trust that I’ll remember everything.

If you lift at a gym, how do you keep track of your routine? or do you?

Today’s workout:

warm up: 10 min on stationary bike to warm up {2.98 miles}

alternating hammer curls            3 x 8 15lb dumbbell
close grip EZ bar curl                     3 x 8 (I think the bar is 18lbs)
front lateral raise                           3 x 8 8lb dumb bell
single arm up-right row                3 x 8 15lb DB
push ups                                           3×8 (2 sets on toes, 1 set on knees)
shoulder press                                3 x 8 15lb DB
rowing machine
1000m 5:12

I am happy with my workout – Once I learn my way around the gym I think I’ll feel more comfortable trying some crossfit-esque lifting. I need to make a few friends so I can ask for help if I need it – I did have to ask a guy for help today because I couldn’t reach something on one of the cable machines (which I ended up not using anyways)..

This week I’m focusing mostly on arms because of the half-marathon this weekend, but next week I plan on working some squats/lunges into the workout.

Bed time.. I’m going to attempt to get up early and run before work ..

Life is meant to be full of days like this {a day in pictures}

….. Sunday afternoon I headed over to my Mom’s to spend a couple of hours with the family.

We are so blessed to be able to get together fairly often – My Mom lives out in the country on 12 acres – 3 of which are swampland, but 9 acres is plenty enough room to stretch our legs on.

see, plenty of room.

Days like Sunday making being 1.5hrs away from family a little more difficult – I can’t wait until we can be in the same zip code.

a photographer I am not

Today we are having a little get-together at my Mom’s house; one of my Sister’s came home from Portland for her friends wedding, and my Aunt Judy is visiting from Kentucky.

Chris is headed over to Clermont now, and I’m at home washing his clothes. How cliché … He got home last night at 11pm, he’d been gone since last Sunday. Needless to say I didn’t put his clothes in the wash as soon as he got home last night, and he it’s a good thing since the power went out shortly after. Not sure what happened there – Thankfully it was cool last night so we opened up the windows and fell asleep to the crickets chirping – it was amazing.

I am incredibly thankful that Chris has a job, and we are able to have the things we need, but man the travelling nearly killed me this week.

For the get-together I made red potato salad; I sort of followed this recipe from allrecipes.com

Red Potato Salad {a healthy-er version}
serving size 1 cup (8oz)
serves 8

3lb red potatoes, washed/cubed
4 hard boiled eggs, peeled/shredded
1/2c celery, diced
1/3c red onion, diced
3tbsp non-fat chobani
1tbsp smart balance mayo
1tsp sea salt
1/2tsp powdered yellow mustard
1/2tsp garlic powder
pepper to taste
1/2 tsp coconut oil

1. Boil potatoes until soft enough to pierce w/ fork, but not mushy – add sea salt to water while potatoes boil. – While potatoes are boiling saute onion & celery in coconut oil. Approximately 5 minutes, set aside.

2. Combine the rest of the ingredients in a bowl with onion & celery.

3. Drain water from potatoes. Pour egg mixture on top of potatoes. Mix & then refrigerate for several hours until cool. Overnight is better so all flavors are absorbed.

potato salad collage

I took 23 pictures of this potato salad last night. This makes me laugh.. I didn’t get my Mom’s photography skills, bummer.
hopefully it tastes better than the pictures look …

red potato salad nutrition

Once the dish was complete I actually measured out how many 8oz cups there were – that is what the nutrition facts are based on. I have a food scale so I weight out 8oz cups until there was none left, which ended up being 8 cups. There must be an easier way, but it was the only way I could think of to get somewhat accurate nutrition facts.

It’s that time again: long-run Saturday

I have two favorite days of the week: Thursday & Saturday. .. Okay, I have three favorite days.. Friday is also a favorite, mostly because it is followed my Saturday.

Thursday’s are my favorite because this is usually the day Chris gets home if he has been working out of town. Unfortunately this week he is STILL gone.

Fridays: end of the work week, and only a few hours until long-run Saturday.

Saturdays: long run day! I absolutely adore long run days. I have to, how else could I get up at 3:45am Saturday after Saturday? I might not always have the best run, and I might not be in the best mood, but I cherish the 90+ minutes that I get to spend with my friends.

Today started out no differently, alarm went off at 3:45, I snoozed it until 4. Got up, ate breakfast, got dressed, and rushed out the door at 5:15. I was almost late to the meet up spot, but good luck (and fast driving) had me arrive just in the knick of time.

It was incredibly humid this morning – When we started out the temps were hovering in the 70’s, and approximately 1,000,000% humidity {is it EVER going to cool down?}. I had to pee, but unfortunately there are no bathroom where we start in Longleaf, and we were starting to late to be able to use the bathroom at a nearby Strider house.. so I whimpered a little and the held it for the next 5 miles.

My first 5 miles were not fun. I ran in the back of the pack {which worked out since they front of the pack nearly got eaten by a big black snake!!} – I struggled to keep my pace steady, I felt like I was all over the place. My breathing was heavy, and I just felt out of it.

We hit the Starkey Park bathrooms around mile 5.3 – I finally got to pee, then Shannon & I turned around and headed pack to our starting point. The last 5 miles were somewhat better. The strap on my watch strap broke (again) so I didn’t know what pace we were running for the duration of the return trip.

I felt like we were hauling ass …. turns out we weren’t. 10 miles oct 2012

This was my last long run before the Halloween Halfathon next weekend.  I JUST registered for it..literally, while I was writing this post I remembered I needed to register so I went ahead and did it before I forgot.

After we finished our run we grabbed some coffee from a local coffee joint then I headed over to The Shops at Wiregrass for the Pasco County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k {walk}.

The walk started at 9.. but 10 we had walked 1.5 miles ….. uhm.. I’m all for fundraising events, but an hour to walk 1.5 miles? Couldn’t do it. After the first lap I dipped out and headed home. Yell at me if you’d like, but I was hot, stinky & starving.

I raised money for the event individually and I also helped organize a bingo fundraiser – I felt like I did my part and didn’t feel to horrible about leaving the walk early.

Now I’m just moping around the house waiting for Chris to get off work. I’m planning on doing some food prep for the coming week, and possibly some yoga..

We’ll see what the rest of the day brings.

How’s your weekend shaping up? Any races?
I know Allie ran a half marathon this morning! (Congrats girl!)
