air it out

Today I learned:
I need to love my water belt.
It’s my friend

I had planned on doing 12 miles today, but yesterday there was some comments on facebook about flooding across the trail just beyond the 4 mile mark, so I decided to cut it down to 8 miles. I don’t mind running through water, but the rumors were that it was pretty deep, and had a bit of a current… Pass.

I started out running w/ Christina, but ended up running most of the 8 miles by myself. I’m glad I brought my iPod (and remembered headphones) this week. It was nice to put in some music, and just space out. I’m usually not a fan of running long by myself; I love running with the group, but today it just worked out that I ran by myself, and it really wan’t to bad.

I had complete freedom to go as fast (or slow) as I wanted and feel no pressure. NOT that anyone pressures me, but when I run w/ someone I feel obligated to run WITH them and that sometimes means running a pace I don’t want to run…and I’m fine with that 99.7 % of the time.. but it really felt great to just air it out today.

I ran hard. and it felt darn good.

I kept looking at my watch and silently freaking out over the pace. “If I’m running a 7:50 in the 2nd mile, will I be able to hold this for the next 6 miles?” “Am I going to burn up and end up crawling back to the parking lot?” “Is this real?”

Stupid self doubt. Running really is a huge mental game. Physically, I was feeling fantastic, but mentally I was scared I’d burn out. Since I was running alone, the pressure was a little less. I just kept pushing, and told me self if I had to, I could slow down on the way back.

We had some fog this morning and it seemed a little “cooler” out… I use the term cooler. extremely loosely. I’m really counting down the days until the cooler temperature roll in for a few months.

I recently bought the amphipod 4 bottle water belt… I’m feeling very meh about it. For one, it’s to big. It I put it around my waist I’m at the very end of the velcro, and if I lose a few more lbs, it will definitely be to big. If I put it down around my hips, it bounces like crazy… I think I might return it. water belt recs? I don’t know if I really need a 4 bottle.. The thing I do like about the amphipod is that I can take off the bottles I don’t want to use – which I guess I could probably do that w/ any belt.  — The flasks are difficult to get out of the snaps. Any tips on how to get them out faster/easier?

Hope you’re enjoying your weekend!
Tomorrow we are headed over to Cocoa Beach on the motorcycle.

I finally got to run outside on Wednesday!
Chris & I headed over to the preserve to check out the water, and so I could get a run in.
There was still a lot of standing water.
At first I tried to dodge it.
Then when we came up to a particularly large “puddle” I hopped on the handle bars of Chris’ bike and he rode through it. … I’ve never ridden on the handle bars of a bike before. That was scary!

Eventually I just gave up dodging “puddles” and started running through them.

Today (thursday) ended up being a rest day; We had some stuff to take care of and I didn’t have enough time after work to run/bike before we had to leave. bummer, I was looking forward to a long bike ride.

Hopefully I can get in 4-5 miles on Friday afternoon. I was planning on a total rest day, but since Thursday was a total rest day, and Saturday I’ll only get to run 8 miles, I think I can manage some miles on Friday.

soooo, whose going to see Magic Mike this weekend? C’mon, fess up!
I bought tickets for me & jenny to see it on Saturday.. Oh man, I’m excited.
Channing Tatum is just hot. I don’t care how horrible the movie might be. I’ll pay $7 to watch him dance around half naked for 90 minutes =P

Have a plan

The sinkhole count is currently at 20 in the county I live in.
My homeowners insurance goes up with every sinkhole that opens up.
My flood insurance goes up every time someone’s house floods.

In all seriousness, this storm has been devastating, and it’s not even a hurricane. It’s just been a tropical depression, but this dumb beetch just won’t move. She’s just sitting in the Gulf hovering.

Okay. Enough about the weather.
even if it is greatly affecting my ability to run outside.

So far this week:

Monday: 4 miles run on the treadmill & 6.7 miles biked on the stationary bike
Tuesday: 3 miles run on the treadmill & 13.7 miles biked on the stationary bike + weights
I found a nice little upper body weight workout on Pinterest today from slimsanity

2 x 15 w/ 5lb weights
shoulder press
tricep kickback
bicep curl
shoulder fly
upright row
tricep extension (over head)
chest press (floor)
one 60 sec plank

I’ll use the word enjoyed loosely, but I did enjoy that weight workout. It was quick and challenging. I don’t know much about weight lifting, and the benefits, but I’ve read a few times recently that muscle burns more calories than fat, so have muscle mass is good.

What are your favorite upper body workouts? LINKS are appreciated! PLEASE!
I know a lot of people like NROLFW, but I don’t have access to a gym.
Any good medicine ball workouts? I’m thinking about getting a medicine ball –

on tap for the rest of the week:

Wednesday: run – 5 miles, bike – 50 minutes
Thursday: bike 70 minutes
Friday: bike 30 minutes easy
aturday: run 12 miles (assuming the trail isn’t still flooded)
Sunday: rest

The “enchanted forest” we run through for runs longer than 8 miles.. That water could be a little problem. Let’s hope it’s receded some by Saturday. …

Ohh, you know, just a shark swimming down the road – This picture was floating around my facebook today. I’ve heard it was photoshopped.. The flooding is real, the shark… probably not, but it’s still neat.

They did find a dead Mama Manatee on Bayshore earlier Tuesday. She had 2 babies with her, but they were okay. =(

Random Question: Have you ever trained your dog to stay out of a certain area/room?
We are currently trying to teach Diva & Wyatt to stay out of the kitchen.
This seems impossible, although, they know that if we say there name while they are in the kitchen they need to get out.. so that’s progress.. but it would be awesome if they didn’t come in at all.
Are we crazy? Do you let your dogs have free rein of the house?

it’s a snoozefest around here. Thanks a lot Debby

Thanks a lot #tropicalstormDebby

Thankfully I was able to get a great 10 mile run in on Saturday morning. The humidity was out of this world disgusting, but we had some really great cloud cover we didn’t have to deal with a blazing sun.

image

Later Saturday afternoon we traveled down to Manatee County to hang out w/ Jenny & her Hubz.. Our original plans were to head over to Ft.Desoto and get some beach time in, but thanks to Tropical Storm Debby we had to make new plans.

Jenny & I spent the whole week trying to think of indoor things we could do. It turns out there is very little indoor entertainment in Tampa/St.Pete.

We decided drinking & catch phrase @ Jenny’s house would be an excellent idea.. and it was. I suck at Catch Phrase, but it’s darn fun! After a lot of rounds of Catch Phrase we headed to Mi Pueblo for dinner. I had the Enchilada de Espinacas & Chimichanga. Yum!

Today has been so boring.
We’ve been watching it rain, literally.

Every so often we look out the front windows and see how flooded the road is.
DSCN1957

We are actually very fortunate; the flooding is much much worse in the areas south of us.

If you’ve ever been to Tampa – That’s Bayshore Blvd.. (picture came from a facebook friend)

and my personal Facebook favorite:

That would be a catfish..in someone’s drive.. a someone that lives no where near a lake.
No clue how that catfish ended up in their driveway, but they weren’t the only ones reporting seeing fish in odd places.

So we’ve basically been hanging out doing nothing all day long. We drove around the neighborhood earlier to check out the flooding… e-x-c-i-t-i-n-g

Please tell me something you did this weekend. I have to live vicariously through other people. This weekend was a total wash..literally. wompwomp

On June 5th I signed up for a My Fitness Pal account. It was also the same day I started to take control.

For a long time I felt out of control.
My mind was spinning
I felt terrible about my body
It was paralyzing

negative thoughts consumed my mind
so many times I wanted to blog about how I felt
but I was/am scared

image

things have changed:

The last 18 days have been terrific.

I feel good.
In control
and that’s a good feeling.

I’ve been consistent with eating healthy.
minus the occasional ice cream.

I’ve gotten back my running mojo
even if most my running takes places on the treadmill these days

I’m loving the stationary bike I bought.
It’s a good way to cross-train
and get my heart pumping

I feel good
and healthy
and that’s what’s important.

For the first time in a long time, I feel comfortable in my clothes
I even walked around the house in my sports bra & jeans last Saturday.
That’s progress.

I’m a work in progress

playing catch up

bike collage
Since it’s been over a week since I posted, I’m going to use this post to play catch up on what’s been going on lately… which is pretty much nothing.

Last week I managed to run 22 miles, and ride 60 miles on my new-to-me stationary bike. Let’s just say my tailbone was a little sore. Riding the motorcycle 150 miles last Sunday didn’t help the tailbone situation either…. we really need to invest in a more comfortable seat.

Saturday I ran 10 miles with Christina; It was a pretty good run for me, 10 miles 8:13/avg. Unfortunately Christina was having some cranky hip issues; despite her hip issues she still finished with an 8:22avg, she was smokin’ that run! Fortunately the heat wasn’t to unbearable. The first few miles were relatively cool {I use the term “cool” VERY loosely”} but once we got into the sun it warmed up pretty quickly. It was tolerable, but running a full marathon in that kind of heat doesn’t excite me one bit. {speaking of marathon… I still don’t know what my goal time is..ahem… DAVID}

Hmm, what else? OH, I bought new shoes. I bought the Adrenaline GTS 12’s on May 20th in size 10. I ran 4 miles in them on the treadmill and decided they were to small. I exchanged them for a 10.5 and those were to big. My feet were just swallowed up by the 10.5’s.
ugh.

Finding all new shoes was kind of nerve wracking! THANKFULLY we have a super great running store, Suncoast Running, who takes care of our running group! They are the best; Tracey spent 1.5hrs with me helping me find the right pair of shoes. Poor Tracey!

I finally decided on the Saucony Guide 5’s (which is the shoe in my hand) + superfeet inserts. The inserts help to keep my gait at a neutral position.
I am sad that I had to change from my beloved Adrenalines, but I’m hopeful that I’ll have a long & {hopefully} healthy relationship with the Saucony’s.

For Father’s Day we went to lunch w/ my Dad & then headed to Clermont to my Mom’s house for a BBQ & other country kid fun. I’m waiting for her to post the pictures, then I’ll write more about it.. it was a good time and I’m so blessed to have so many sisters, nieces/nephew & brother’s-in-law.

….and that brings me to Today. Whew. Today I rode the bike for 60 minutes, which came out to be 14.7 miles, then when Chris got home we went for a run/walk in the preserve near our house. Chris’ knee started to bother him so we ended up walking the 1.5 miles back to the car. I ran home from the preserve so I was able to add another 1/2 mile for a grand total for 3.5 miles.

I wasn’t really looking for any sort of speed or record distance today. I’m a little leery of the new inserts so I wanted to take it easy and just see how they felt.  — They felt okay. Weird, and kind of uncomfortable; I think I just need to get used to them. Maybe I should wear them to work for a few days. I don’t walk around much at work, so I wouldn’t really be putting on any additional mileage; just getting used to the way the insert feels I guess.

Chris is home this week, so that means I’ll actually be cooking real meals. I did make some meals last week, nothing exciting, but maybe I’ll share one recipe later this week – I really want/need to get back into the habit of blogging more than once every 10 days. I’ll work on that. Tonight we tried Quinoa for the very first time.. It was rather bland; I will definitely eat it, but I don’t think Chris was a fan. He said, “I’d rather eat brown rice.” LOL.. well, okay then.

Alright, last thing, and then I’ll go: My run/bike schedule for this week.

Monday:  run 3.5 miles / bike 60 minutes
Tuesday: run 5 miles / bike 45 minutes
Wednesday: run 4 miles  bike 50 minutes        HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRIS !!!!! (THE BIG 31)
Thursday: bike 70 minutes
Friday: REST
Saturday: 8-10 possible- Not sure yet. going to Ft.Desoto for Chris’ bday
Sunday: depends on what happens Saturday. If no long run Saturday, I’ll do it Sunday.
Total run: 22     bike: unknown miles

Rap River Run 5k: He did it

image

Saturday morning we ran the Rap River Run 5k in New Port Richey. This was Chris’ first, and possibly last 5k. Running is my thing, he likes it, and he enjoys being able to run together, but I don’t think going out at 7am to run 3 miles in the blistering humidity is his idea of a good time.

Nevertheless, he did it.

The race started at 7:30, so we left the house around 5:50.. I’m a touch anal about getting to race starts early. I freak out about traffic, or getting lost – so If I get to a race an hour early and have to stand around, then so be it… Chris doesn’t really feel the same way. Arrive at 6:20 for a 7:30 race start was kind of ridiculous, but he deals with my crazy well, so it was okay.

Around 7:10 we went out for a warm up run with one of my teammates, Chris. We ran for about 10 minutes, and got a great feel for how ridiculously humid it really was. ugh. I must have said this 10 million times yesterday, but I was so thankful not to be racing. My plan was to run with Chris and keep him on pace. Like a lot of new runners, hell, like a lot of runner in general, not just new runners; Chris like to go balls to the wall in the first mile, and then slowly dies the last 2 miles. We knew that he would be able to have a better race if I was there a long side him to keep him in check

We discussed keeping an avg of 9min/mile – Chris was on board with this. I wasn’t sure what he was capable of, but since he doesn’t have a garmin, and he doesn’t know how fast he’s running, I thought I could push him just a little. (shhh, don’t tell him).

The gun went off at 7:30, and we were on our way to finishing Chris’ first 5k!

jena chris start
I look like death in all the pictures I’ve seen so far.. not cool

For me, the first mile was uneventful…. maybe I should have Chris write his own recap. I’ll ask him. We didn’t say much in the first mile, I was just trying to keep us on track. Chris later told me that when he saw the 1 mile sign he though, “WHAT?! ONLY A MILE! I THOUGHT WE WERE HALF WAY THERE!!!!”

Mile 2 was as equally uneventful. The course winds around some neighborhoods in New Port Richey, nothing really exciting but it’s a decent course. We did get to see the lead runners, but I didn’t get to see to many of my Strider friends. One of my favorite part of out & back courses is seeing all my friends either in front of or behind me! I love cheering for them as we pass by – I’m sure other runners find my random bursts of shouting annoying, but I really don’t care.

Mile 3, Chris started to struggle a little bit. IT WAS HUMID, y’all. He eventually broke down and took off the thick white shirt that he insisted on wearing. It is an “athletic” shirt, but it’s not wicking, and it’s really thick. He carried the shirt for a few minutes, but when he started to really struggle I offered to carry it for him. (nasty. it was SOAKED).

We slowed our pace just a tiny bit; I tried to give him a few pointers to relax and just focus on the task at hand.. I gave him the same tips that David gives me when I’m killing myself in the last mile of our long runs:

  • deep breath in through your nose, out SLOWLY through your mouth
  • relax your shoulders
  • stand up straight
  • relax your hips, push them forward

image

Garnin time is 27:03, 8:36 avg. Official results haven’t been posted yet, but we weren’t far from the start line, so it’s probably within a few seconds.

image

Chris said he had a good time, and he was glad that I ran with him. He also said racing isn’t his thing, but he would do a 5k every couple of months.

I hope he sticks with running through the summer; I think he’d have an even better 5k time with some cooler weather!

really? only 1200

IMG_2102[1]So since I have short hair now, putting it back in a pony tail when I run is not really an option. I do have a little baby penis sized (Sorry mom) pony tail, but then there are all these random hairs that stick out everywhere. I tried a regular bicband type head band, but that wasn’t very successful..

The point of that stupid paragraph is to explain to you why I felt the need to order $30 worth of bondi bands. I tried a bondi band on once at an expo a few years ago.. I looked stupid. nothing has changed, I still look stupid. I’m trying to remember that it doesn’t matter what I look like, right?

Anyways. So I tried my new bondi bands out yesterday on my stationary bike ride, and today during my treadmill run & bike ride. They work fine. They kind of slip up in the back.. annoying. It’s likely that I wasted $30 on these stupid things.

image

Yesterday I rode 11.6 miles in 45 minutes – not really impressive, but whatever. It got my heart pumping a little, and 45 minutes is better than no minutes. Today I ran 4 miles in 34:55, then rode 5.2 miles in 20 minutes. I think I’m going to like having a stationary bike in the house – it’s not the most fun thing in the world, but it’s a good workout and it gives my knees a break from the pounding. So far my week is shaping up nicely in the working out department – not exactly what I had scheduled, but I’ll take it.

In an effort to get a grip on how much I eat during the day, I joined my fitness pal – This thing can’t be right, it told me I need to eat 1200 calories a day in order to lose 5lbs? Is that right? 1200 doesn’t seem like enough…which could be why I’ve been stuck at the same weight for a year. I know 5lbs is stupid.. people say, “I fluctuate that much.”  I’m afraid to put my weight because I don’t need all sorts of ridiculous comments. So lets just say that I want my top fluctuating weight to be what my current weight is right now. moving on from the weight topic.

What really surprised me is that when I plugged in everything I ate today, I was only over by about 250 calories – then when I plugged in my workouts It told me I needed to eat 3XX more calories. Hm. Interesting. I also bought a food scale; not because I want to be crazy obsessive, but because I want to get a better idea of portion sizes.

image

Don’t worry. I don’t plan on posting my food everyday. I just think it’s kind of interesting to see how many calories are actually in each item. What I want to know, is how in the world do people eat NO CARBS!?!?!?! ridiculous.

please excuse the FOUR mini york peppermint patties!!!  I get a crazy sweet tooth after lunch and love those things! SO TASTY!

Apparently I suck at eating healthy fats. Suggestions? Avocados? Almonds? What else people?
Maybe I haven’t found it yet, but there is nowhere that shows how many servings of fruit/veggies I SHOULD eat, and what I DID eat. Obviously I can count, but I like little graphs and pretty charts with numbers.

Now I’m off to read Total Money Makeover, by Dave Ramsey…dundundun
