fun w/ the whole damn family

It’s officially okay to say damn. On Sunday we went to Clermont to have some family time. My sister, Brianne, is in town from Portland for a few days so we went to Clermont to see her. After church we went to the Historic Village in Clermont to take some pictures. My Grandma showed up to open up the village, or something – she is part of the historic society. When she realized we were all there she said, “The whole damn family is here.”   Ya’ll, this is hilarious- My Grandma is a very Godly woman, and “damn” is the last thing you’d expect to come out of her mouth. She got some good laughs for that one.

You know what is not fun? Watching Wyatt’s every move. That is not my idea of a good time. He has a hot spot above his tail right now and he keeps chewing, chewing, chewing. When we got home yesterday afternoon I noticed that he had chewed all the way down to the skin and it was looking raw. I loaded back up in the car and headed to petsmart to buy a cone. I feel so bad for him #1 bc he has this spot that causes him so much grief #2 because he has to wear a damn cone. Poor guy, he is not happy.

(we do not routinely keep a ladder in the living room. I was using it to decorate the Christmas tree).

Wyatt stood in the same position for about 5 minutes. He would not move. I even put a treat on the floor in front of him & he wouldn’t move. He hates the cone. I’m not sure what causes this hot spot, but this is the 2nd time he’s had it. Last time we took him to the vet where they gave him a steroid shot. I’m trying to avoid that option, but if his spot isn’t healed in a few days we’ll be headed to the vet.

I really can’t believe that November is coming to a closer & December is sneaking up on us! It feels wintery today – it’s rainy and a little windy and the temperature was 61 when I was headed home from work. Yippee!! I’m so excited for the cooler weather.

Unfortunately it had been raining for a few hours so running outside was not a possibility due to flooded streets. I had a speed work out on my schedule. I have no idea what this type of work out is called. I’ll write it out, and y’all tell me what it’s called.

Workout (on the treadmill)

DSCN0444

I wrote this out on a piece of paper & then taped it to the wall in front of the treadmill. I’m so creative. ha

I’ll be the first to admit that I was not excited about family pictures. I obviously like to take pictures of myself, but I prefer to be goofy & cut up. Serious pictures aren’t fun. It turned out to be a lot of fun. What was supposed to be a few pictures turned into over an hour of picture taking!  — Lucky you, they aren’t all posted yet (ahem, Mom, work faster please! Smile

see, I don’t do serious very well.

and my favorite one so far:

Okay, this post is obviously very narcissistic. I’m okay with it though. I had a blast yesterday taking pictures with my sisters.

I’ll stop now. If you made it this far, you rock!

obsessed

Waking up at 5:43am when you’re supposed to be leaving at 5:45 is really not ideal. That’s how my morning started – I briefly entertained the idea of just staying in bed and doing my 8 miles later or on Sunday. It’s my own fault I slept this late. I set my alarm for 4:50 – snoozed it once, and then turned it off all together. oops.

I rushed around to get dressed, grabbed half a blueberry bagel with some water & was out the door by 5:55. That’s super speedy for me. I’m the slowest person in the world when it comes to getting ready in the morning.

At 6:47 I hit the trail with a whole army of people..which I won’t name because I can’t remember them all. We stopped at the 2 point something water station and had a drink (of water) (to early for alcohol).

I told JM earlier this week that I wanted to run 8 miles, but at a faster pace, around 8:10-8:20 (mostly 8:10). I know I’m capable of this pace, I just have to put my mind to it and get it done.

At the 4 mile mark JM, Rudy & I turned around and headed back, while Tracey & Jackie continued on for Jackie’s (dreaded) 13 miler.

Thankfully we had some cooler weather this morning with low humidity so our run was pretty pleasant. I could tell I was working for the pace we were maintaining, but it felt good. I struggled with the last mile, but that’s understandable seeing as how it was 7:47.

image

I’m very happy with our run. I need to get that first mile a little faster, but other than that I’m definitely happy with our pace. Especially the last 4 miles. To break 1:50 race pace needs to be an 8:23.  — I will not stop obsessing over breaking 1:50 until it happens, so if it bothers you – you should just exit now and come back around the end of March when race season is over. Smile

Last week(thanksgiving week) was pretty much a recovery week from my 1/2 on Sunday(11/20). I don’t like to take 3 days off, but my legs were sore, and I had the 10k on Thursday that I wanted to be rested for.

This week I’m running some shorter runs, but hope to incorporate some speed into them. I’m anti-speed work, but I’m not going to get faster with out it, so with the help of some friends I’m going to kick these speed work thing into high gear. (I hope).

November 28th – December 4th

Monday: 5×400’s (1mi warm up;1mi cool down) 4 mi total
Tuesday: 3mi @ 8:15
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: 3mi @ 8:30
Friday: 4 mi easy
Saturday: undetermined
Sunday: undetermined  (Strider Picnic)

Total: 14 – I’m not sure what our weekend plans are yet, so I’m not sure what/when/where my long run will be.

don’t be jealous of my hat

Have you recovered from your Thanksgiving Day food coma?

I’m not going to recap our Thanksgiving food. That’s boring. We didn’t do anything special, besides the Turkey Trot. The guys went fishing .. We ate dinner later than I wanted to. We didn’t have mashed potatoes (sad) but we had some delicious apple pie & pumpkin pie.

I also learned that taking pictures of oneself is more difficult than it should be. Unless it’s in the bathroom in front of the mirror – I was born with that skill.

DSCN0310
it’s okay to be jealous of our hats

Friday morning we said goodbye to Billy & Sherry. They decided to head home a little earlier than planned, which worked out since we had some errands to get done today.

I really wanted to get our Christmas tree today, so we headed to Lowes’ to see what they had. We wanted to see what their prices were so we could compare the prices of the trees at a local church. Apparently the church isn’t selling Christmas trees this year or we were early – There was no tent or trees when we drove by =(  We bought from them on Black Friday last year, so I’m assuming we weren’t early – bummer.  We drove around a little bit to see if any of the other churches were selling trees. Nope.

I did find a farm about an hour away that has trees that we can supposedly cut down ourselves. Do Christmas trees grow in Florida? I have no idea. I guess we’ll find out, won’t we?

I’m looking forward to my moderately long run Saturday. After Thursday’s great run I’m feeling a little risky & want to try and maintain a pace between 8:10-8:20 .. we’ll see.

It’s time for bed. I’m tired, and I’m starting to get on my own nerves.

I smiled

Happy Thanksgiving

Hope you’ve had a lovely Thanksgiving

We (my friend Sherry & I) started our morning nice & early @ 4:45. I had plans to run the St. Pete Times Turkey Trot (10k). Sherry was also planning on running it but due to some unresolved foot pain she decided not to run. I’m sad my friend couldn’t run, but glad that she still came to hang out.

The SPT races are a pretty big deal in the Clearwater area – I’m not sure how many people were there, but it was a big crowd. The St. Pete Times offers something for everyone. There is a 5k fun run, a 5k competitive run, a 1 mile fun run & the 10k.

I registered for the 10k with hopes of being in the top 125 women, and running a PR. The top 125 women & top 125 men receive neato SPT Turkey Trot coffee mugs!

I lined up near the front of the pack so that I wouldn’t have to weave to much, and hopefully reserve my coffee mug. When the gun went off I was by myself ( No striders) but within a few minutes I found Tracey & David, which was perfect because I knew Tracey wanted a sub 50 race – same as me.

Our first mile was 7:52, ooph. My legs were feeling a little heavy & stiff, so I was worried that I would crash & burn. – The weather was pretty nice, so at least we had that on our side.

SEE, I’m smiling. weeee I looove running

Mile 2 was a little more conservative at 7:56. An 8:02 avg would secure a sub 50 race.

Miles 3 & 4 we slowed down, 8:10 & 8:12. Somewhere in mile 4 or 5 there was a long incline. I feel funny saying there was a hill on a course, because I’ve seen elevation maps of courses that actually have big hills and our elevations look nothing like that. However, for this area, we had a hill, and it didn’t kill me, and I was happy. wheeee

sidenote: our windows are open and I can hear the neighbors screaming at each other. yay thanksgiving family get togethers.

Miles 5 & 6 I found another gear and pushed forward. I felt good. I felt strong. I felt …. happy. whoa. happy, while running? Huh. what a concept that is.

mile 5: 7:59
mile 6:  7:50
.25: 6:55

I squeaked in at 49:44, 99th female and secured my top finisher mug !! woot!

It’s a good sign when 4 out of 6 miles were sub8. That makes me smile!

image

I really enjoyed this race – the weather was nice and the course was lovely. We ran through Clearwater, and apparently part of downtown Largo (according to my garmin map). There were a few little bands, and some people hooked up stereo systems in their driveways with music blasting. I’m not a fan of big races with lots of crowds but somehow this race didn’t seem all that crowded – except the start ..somebody was smelly.

I felt focused, and on point. Not a mess like last week. What a difference a good race can make in my attitude, right David? heh.

DSCN0301

Sherry & me eagerly waiting for the Turkey to get done frying. We were super hungry. The boys fished until almost 4pm. eesh.

Are you crazy people going shopping on Black Friday?

The only place I plan on going is the running store. They are having a sale on shoes, and who doesn’t love a good sale on shoes? However, they open at 10 AM.. you people are crazy going at the ass crack of.. well, you’re just crazy.

marathon foto FTW

Thanks for all the nice comments after my ridiculous whiney, poor poor Jena post on Sunday evening. You guys are nice & I’m whiney. We can still be friends, right?

I took a break Monday from the blog so I could try to think of some positive things about my race. I’m still thinking, but I’ll be back some time in the near future to reflect on that doozy of a race.

image

That KT tape job is why my knee hurts. that is a jacked up tape job. Let me tell you what happened; I taped my knee before I went to bed, like I usually do. At approximately 2am a herd of elephants arrived in the room above us and proceeded to stampede around for the next 2 hrs. Sometime between 2 –3am I was doing a lot of tossing & turning and the green tape started peeling off. I got up and re-taped..at 3am. pretty sure that is what led to the faulty tape job. It’s fine, my knee is feeling better now, so I’m not so cranky about that anymore.

95% of my pictures have this exact same face. cute.

imageimageimage

This picture below is the winner – seriously. my face is awesomeimage

love it.

I’m such a good sport. ha ha ha

but seriously. I PR’d. so, that’s great! I had a rough race, that’s bad. I think I put way to much pressure on myself for this race. who do I think I am anyways? No one cares how I race but me. I mean, of course my team hopes I succeed, but they aren’t going to shun me if I have a bad race. (right guys?..right?) and. I did succeed. I PR’d. I have to just keep telling myself that. I didn’t have the 2 min PR that I wanted, but 30 seconds is better than none, so I’ll be happy with that.

I know I have a sub 1:50 in me. I know I do, but Sunday wasn’t my day. My day IS coming..soon. I have a few other half-marathons on my schedule from now until March.

I’ll get that darn 1:50 if it kills me.

WHM recap in pictures because trust me, you don’t want me to talk about it.

Thanks to Aaron for letting me use some of his pictures in this post.

7AM: GO!

7:08:15AM:

get a good look at that smile, because it doesn’t appear again.. at all

sometimes in the next 13 miles: (somewhere between 7 & 8)

heading onto the pier .. 7 or 8? I don’t know. my brain is fried @ this point

exiting the pier. hallelujah. what good attitude I had also exited at this point.

Hmm, now that I really look @ this picture – I’m not sure where it’s at. There were no cars parked like that on the pier… Aaron? Anyone? Where was this?

There are no pictures from miles 9-12. hallelujah for that as well. I was on pace for the first 9 miles – I was rockin’ it btwn 8:18-8:20 pretty nicely..and then… it just fell apart. I’m a gigantic wimp when it comes to inclines so I’m probably just being a baby but there was a gradual incline for.ev.er at mile 9 and it’s pretty obvious when you look @ my splits that I came unraveled at that point.

The Suncoast Running (our local running store) was at mile 10. I was quite excited to see them as I was counting down the miles until I would see some people i  knew again. that’s sad, right? JM handed me some gatorade, I cussed at her, and then headed off again. I really just wanted to stop and hang out w/ them – that would have been way more fun then running the rest of the race. JM then proceeded to drag me through the next mile. She caught up with me and carried me kicking & screaming through the stupid Tropicana Field. .. she didn’t literally carry me, but that would have been cool. I’m 100% sure that she saved me from dying. I know for a fact that I would have stopped to walk at least twice through that mile, but she is a real drill Sergeant and wouldn’t let me walk.

Suncoast Running was also at mile 12 (it was across the street from 10) so she dumped me there and made me finish by myself. I grabbed 3 cups of water from this stop. (I’m greedy & hot).. I dumped 2 on my head, 1 in my mouth. I hobbled through the last mile and finally crossed the finish line.

The deets: because you didn’t really come here to look at 500 angry pictures of me, did you?

WHM splits 2011-2

On a positive note, I PR’d by 30 seconds…so there’s that. A 2nd positive note, I was on pace for the first 9 miles.. 3rdly ……… {crickets}  I got a pretty finisher’s medal with a pretty charm that I put on a pretty charm bracelet. No pictures right now. I’m tired and don’t feel like it. maybe tomorrow. Oh 4thly, you should thank me for not posting the original recap I wrote of this race. It’s long & whiney. If you thought this recap was whiney, think again, the other one was ridiculous.

Here’s the thing: I feel like an idiot. I’m embarrassed. I feel like I talked all this shit, and then didn’t perform. I know I can’t control the weather and I can’t control the course (although I can control not ever doing this race again). But, it’s still frustrating to not meet a goal..or any of the goals I set for this race.

Other things to note:

  • running on brick street sucks
  • running on astro turf sucks worse (ahem..tropicana field)
  • I had a cramp starting @ mile 3 and subsiding @ 7.5 (fun times)
  • my hips felt like exploding
  • my R knee is killing me
  • I could barely lift my left arm when I crossed the finish line (???)
  • there was no cold water at the finish line
  • publix cookies are really yummy
  • we had record highs today
  • my nickname in school was Whiner Griner – so this recap is right up my alley- whiney

Hopefully when I wake up Monday morning I’ll feel all sunshiney & rainbows again.

pre-race nonsense

My stupid body was awake at 4am this morning.. Hello body, it’s Saturday – in all fairness, I normally get up at 5am on Saturday to get my long run in with the group. This morning, I got to sleep in until 7. I just couldn’t take tossing & turning anymore so I got up and put some coffee on & made Chris & me some scrambled eggs. I’ve been on a scrambled egg kick lately – they seem to keep my fuller longer than oatmeal. I don’t know if that really makes sense, but I swear it’s the truth.

My Mom showed up at my house around 10:15ish so we could ride down to St. Pete together.

DSCN0111

Mom should have taken the picture faster

DSCN0112
concentrating really hard.

We made it to downtown St. Pete around 12 where I proceeded to almost kill a few pedestrians and several people in cars. I seriously don’t do one-way streets, or downtown big cities. I’m a small town girl for sure, and it shows when I get into big cities. I freak.

I have no pictures of the expo. When you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. They did have a big magazine cover that you could stand in front of to take your picture, but that is on my Mom’s phone & I’m to lazy to transfer it to my computer. deal with it.

Nothing very exciting going on around here right now. We went to Publix after we checked into our hotel. We needed some snacky stuff & breakfast for the morning.

Oh, my Mom learned the pleasures of foam rolling. She had a blast on that thing.

DSCN0114

She’s really going to be mad when she sees this on the blog. BAHAHA

The funny thing, is that she is sitting behind me while I type this.

DSCN0163

Let me tell you how relieved I was when I saw that my number is 1336. Phew. That means I’m in corral #1. I knew there was a super slim chance that I’d be in another corral, but you just never know. I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Okay, that’s enough nonsense. We are pretty much doing nothing until about 6:30ish – then we are going to carabbas for some pizzzzza & pasta!

Next time you hear from me I’ll either be crying mad tears, or happy tears. For your sake, and my Mom’s, let’s hope they are happy tears!

tapering is boring

I wrote a blog post on Tuesday that should have been up on Wednesday. Live writer ate it though, so it didn’t go up. I really don’t know where it went? I set the time to publish @ 12am on Wednesday and then when I checked the blog on Wednesday morning it wasn’t there. I checked my Live Writer when I got home on Wednesday, and it wasn’t there either. It’s a mystery !!

Then, I wrote a post on Wednesday, but it was just boring. I really have nothing to say when I’m not really running. Nothing to bitch about, and nothing to be happy about.

I did run 3 miles on Tuesday. My time was 25:11, 8:23/avg. I also ran on Wednesday, 3 miles 24:32, 8:10/avg. I also ate an entire bag of Pirate’s booty in 2.5 days. Not a snack size bag either, a big size bag.. by myself. Oh well, it was tasty.

Five things Friday

Generally I’m not a fan of popular blog trends, but because I really have nothing else to say, I’ll do a 5 things Friday. Bare with me – please don’t stop reading because of this. I swear next week we’ll be back to the regular woes & triumphs of running.. assuming I don’t die on Sunday – which is a real possibility.

Next time you hear from me, I’ll probably be having an anxiety attack! Sunday is closing in … dun dun dun

get it together

What a great weekend! It was totally relaxing (except for the part where I spent a few hours cleaning the house).. but other than that, it was nice & relaxing.

Monday Tuesday is here, and with Monday Tuesday brings last weeks recap, and a new meal plan. I’ve been slacking on the meal planning – well, I haven’t been putting it on the blog, but I’ve still been planning meals. It’s the only way I can stay in my grocery budget.

Let’s look at last week’s miles:

What should have been & what actually happened

Monday –  5  actual 3 – thank you creeper
Tuesday – 6 – actual 6
Wednesday-  rest actual 3  I wanted to make up the miles from Monday
Thursday- 5 actual was 5
Friday- rest yup, I rested
Saturday- 10 actual 10.. harder than I anticipated but still 10
Sunday- rest for sure rested. my legs were done

Total actual miles – 27

That’s a pretty good week of training (for me).

image

This week is an easy week with all runs being at a slow, relaxed pace and without my garmin.

Monday, Thursday & Saturday are rest days
Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday are 3 mile days
Sunday is race day

After this race I want to work on increasing my mid-week miles. Unfortunately, this time of year is probably not the best time to try and start increasing miles, only because it gets dark so early. Running more than 5 or 6 miles before dark is difficult. This might be easier to accomplish if I could get out the door for a run in the morning. It would seem that no time of year is really a good time to run; it’s either to hot, or get dark to early. I guess I’m going to have to decide which one I hate less. This is a something I need to think about ,and re-visit after this weekend.

Meals

This week brings nothing but easy meals. I didn’t feel like scouring the interwebz or cookbooks for new recipes this week so I’m sticking with some oldies, but goodies.

grilled buffalo chicken w/ carrots
spaghetti
chili
sausage w/ peppers & onions

and I’ll have to come up with one other meal, maybe left over spaghetti or chili. I’ll be out of town Saturday night, and possibly Sunday night at dinner time, so Chris will have to fend for himself.

Organized hoarding:

Sunday I watched hours of Extreme Couponing on TLC. hours. It was the only thing on. I can’t understand the obsession with having that much crap in your house. No way. I could understand an extra couple of body washes, soaps, canned goods.. but entire rooms/garages dedicated to extra stuff. No. Even if it’s free. I don’t care. I don’t have enough time, or patience for that mess. Plus, there are no stores locally that have the kind of in-store programs that these people seem to be taking advantage of.

Chris told me that he wouldn’t mind if we had a small stockpile. I just stared at him. I would agree with have a small amount of canned goods, and some water stored. But, I don’t need half my house full of stuff I won’t be alive long enough to use.

How do you feel about extreme couponing? Organized hoarding? or Necessary?

Happy early birthday to meeee

Happy Sunday!

You know what’s great about getting up early on Saturday? Besides burning lots of calories early, copious amounts of coffee and laying in bed? When you get up that early the day seems really long, and then you still have all day Sunday to do whatever you want to do. It’s glorious! I love it! Sunday isn’t bringing us anything special, that I know of, but I’m still excited about it.

So, my birthday is coming up, and by coming up I mean, it’s December 10th. It’s still a few weeks away, but we like to celebrate early… I’m kidding. We never celebrate my birthday early. This year Chris knew what he wanted to get me early (instead of the day before) so he went ahead and got me a present. He was so excited about this progress that he’s been dying to give me my present since he bought it Friday morning. I told him I didn’t want it until my birthday. I feel like I’m cheating taking it early… but then I changed my mind!

I had no idea what he could be getting me- I mentioned I wanted a carhartt jacket, but I knew he didn’t drive up to Ocala. I also want an Ipod nano, but he won’t buy me one because I already have the sansa MP3 player thing. That’s pretty much all I could think of. So I was SHOCKED when I unwrapped the box and found this baby

(stolen from the bestbuy website.) It’s the Nikon Coolpix L120 – I don’t need a DSLR, because let’s face it, I’m not food blogger, or any kind of blogger that needs to take super duper good pictures of anything. So far so good with the camera. I like that it has a big viewing screen, and lots of setting.

L120 PICS

One fun feature I found is a setting for pets. I can never get Diva or Wyatt to look at me when I want to take their picture. The pet setting allows me to hold the button down and it will continuously take pictures until I release the button. The same feature is used for sports.

DSCN0065

The moon

We took the puppies for a walk this morning, and it was lovely outside. The weather was just cool enough to be comfortable in jeans & a long sleeve shirt.

DSCN0064

We also went to Lowes today to buy barstools that we’ve needed since we built our house. I suppose we don’t need them, but I want to sit at the bar sometimes with my computer, and that’s not possible without barstools. We checked out the lowes website before we went so the trip would be a little faster. We decided on 29” espresso colored bar stools.

DSCN0084[1]

For some reason we thought they would be closer to the color of our floor. Oh well, we like them. They are just the right height, and I’m currently sitting on one while I type out this post.

Next up on my list of things to do is create a playlist for my upcoming half-marathon. I’m going to try to run w/o music, but I need to get a good playlist together just in case.

Any great songs I should put on my playlist? I’m open to anything. I’ll let you know If I already have the song, and I’ll post the final play list later this week… rest assured that I will be obsessing and blogging about this upcoming marathon this week.
